TYPE O NEGATIVE Guitarist: 'We Are In Touch With Our Feminine Side'

November 14, 2007

Wayne Bledsoe of Scripps Howard News Service reports: If you were to look at TYPE O NEGATIVE's photo or hear the band's music, you might get the impression that the members of the group eat their breakfast cereal from split human skulls.

"Oh, yeah," says TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey. "They think that we're really evil and dark vampire dudes from Brooklyn. People take us so seriously, like we're dark, evil, scary guys, when most of our career we've spent trying to make fun of ourselves. We're complete goof-offs."

Hickey has to take a moment to finish a conversation with his mom about her pipes before moving on with the interview.

"I used to be a plumber," he says in a classic Brooklyn accent. "She still thinks I'm a plumber."

In truth, as dark as TYPE O NEGATIVE's music can be, it stands apart from most modern metal through use of melody, nods to classic rock, and very evident humor. There are moments when the music could actually be described as "pretty."

"We are in touch with our feminine side," says Hickey with a chuckle. "Sometimes it gets so melodic that it does get pretty. I don't think it's intentional. I think a lot of it is experimentation and exploring what will work in certain places."
